Celebrating Jamai Shoshti on 1st June 2025

As summer begins to set in, Bengali households gear up to celebrate one of the most cherished familial festivals — Jamai Shoshti, which falls on 1st June this year. This traditional occasion, deeply rooted in Bengali culture, is a beautiful celebration of the bond between a son-in-law (jamai) and his in-laws, especially the shoshur-bari (in-laws’ house).

What is Jamai Shoshti?

Jamai Shoshti is a traditional Bengali festival observed primarily in West Bengal and Bangladesh. On this day, the mother-in-law (shoshuri) lovingly invites her son-in-law to her home and treats him like royalty — with lavish meals, gifts, rituals, and blessings.

It is more than just a feast; it's a symbolic gesture of respect, gratitude, and strengthening family ties.



The Grand Feast: Love Served on a Plate

A highlight of Jamai Shoshti is the elaborate meal prepared for the jamai. The menu often includes:

  • Shorshe Ilish (Hilsa in mustard gravy)

  • Chingri Malai Curry (Prawns in coconut gravy)

  • Luchi & Alur Dom

  • Mutton Curry

  • Sweets like Rosogolla, Sandesh, and Mishti Doi

The food is served with love, often on banana leaves, and the jamai is treated like a king for the day.

Rituals and Gifts

The day usually starts with a puja for Shashti Devi, praying for the well-being of the family. The mother-in-law then performs a ritual tying a yellow thread on the son-in-law’s wrist, followed by gifting him clothes (often a panjabi or dhoti) and other goodies. Some families even organize small get-togethers or post pictures on social media, making it a modern celebration rooted in tradition.
